The US “strongly and vehemently” supports the NSG clean waiver for India and hopes that the Indo-US nuclear agreement will “continue to move in a positive direction,” outgoing US ambassador to India Timothy J Roemer said in his farewell address on Thursday.
It was Roemer’s last day in office Thursday. Roemer said with India’s commitment and “as they (India) look to ratify the Convention on Supplementary Compensation for Nuclear Damage and work closely with the US companies,” he was hopeful that the Indo-US civil nuclear agreement will continue to move in a positive direction.
The remarks guaranteeing US support to India on entry into NSG and other nuclear non-proliferation clubs, is a reiteration of a recent statement by the US government.
“I want to say that the US and the Obama Administration strongly and vehemently support the clean waiver for India. The 123 civil nuclear legislation also underscores our support for India in this debate that is going on and our law also points to the clean waiver for India,” he said.
In light of recent developments at NSG, prime minister Manhoman Singh’s statement on Wednesday suggested India was already exploring its options, especially with France and Russia who India hopes will keep their bilateral commitment on nuclear commerce after the 2008 NSG waiver.
Roemer said, “In the last two years, we have seen significant success in US-India relationship. First, we have seen Manmohan Singh being honoured for a state dinner given by the Barack Obama administration. (Secondly) we saw the president of US coming to India, ” he added.
