The death toll owing to malaria has risen to eleven in the city after another victim identified as one Mainaben Patni of Saraspur ward succumbed to the illness at Shardaben Hospital on Friday.
Of the eleven deaths in the last one week, Saraspur ward has registered five (including the recent one) whereas one each was reported from Nikol, Vastral, Paldi, and south zone. On Thursday itself, 16 cases of malaria were reported from the city. The figures for malaria for August doesn't present a rosy picture with 198 people admitted to hospitals. During the year (Jan- Aug), 2,997 malaria cases were registered. Also on rise are falciparum cases which have seen a recent spurt. 79 falciparum cases were reported last week and the figure has now shot up to 108 for August.On Thursday, 13 cases of falciparum were reported.
Twelve cases of malaria and 15 of falciparum were registered on Friday. AMC's medical officer Dr SP Kulkarni said the actual death due to malaria was six and not eleven. "Action is being taken to prevent its spread. Health officials' have intensified the intra-domestic round checking. We have also got the Artemisinin-based Combination Therapy (ACT) drugs to control falciparum cases," he said.
