In a bid to repair leaking water pipes in the new west zone, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) is planning to put forward Rs43.24 lakh proposal in front of the standing committee.

The civic body has come across many cases of leakages in the PVC pipelines used for water supply in various wards like Vejalpur, Sarkhej, and Jodhpur, laid by Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority. "Unlike other zones, there is no staff to maintain and repair the water supply lines in this zone, as there was no such mechanism in erstwhile Nagarpalika," said Jatin Patel, chairman of AMC's water supply and sewerage committee.

The opposition Congress has raised eyebrows at the single tender and lower cost quoted by the contractor. Badruddin Shaikh, leader of opposition in AMC has expressed displeasure at the methods of the civic body, and accused them of favouring the contractors. He also questioned the amount of maintenance and repair work being undertaken, along with replacing of PVC lines with CI pipes.
