The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has sought for the custody of Danish Riaz alias Saif in a case filed in Kerala and now being investigated by the central agency.

The agency had filed a formal application before the metropolitan magistrate seeking permission to arrest Riaz in the case being investigated by the agency.

The NIA had been investigating the case related to a secret training camp, organised by the Students’ Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) activists at Thangalpara, Wagamon in December 2007.

The case was initially registered with the local police of Kerala but was investigated by Kottayam crime branch. However, when during investigation it was revealed that the said case was purely related to terrorist activities and had inter-state ramifications, ministry of home affairs directed National Investigation Agency (NIA) to take up probe in the matter.

NIA had then re-registered the case on January 21, 2010.  Danish is one of the seven wanted accused in the case along with top SIMI activists Abdul Subhan Qureshi. In the application filed by GV Ramana, deputy superintendent of police, NIA, the agency stated that Danish is shown as a wanted accused in the case. The trial against 30 arrested in the case has already begun.

The investigation done by a NIA team, established the involvement of 30 hardcore SIMI activists from various states in the case. Out of these 30 SIMI activists 4 belonged to Kerala, 9 to Karnataka, 9 to Gujarat, 7 to Madhya Pradesh and 1 to Uttar Pradesh.

The investigation further revealed that these 30 members are all active cadres of SIMI. Out of the 30 accused, 29 SIMI activists were arrested and they are now lodged at the Sabarmati Central Jail. They are involved in various terrorist cases reported in the country including the Ahmedabad serial blast of 2008.

Investigation done by the NIA revealed that in and around November 2007, office bearers and functionaries of SIMI, entered into a criminal conspiracy in Choral, Madhya Pradesh and other places to conduct training camps for their active cadres.

Accordingly, they conducted camps in Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh and other places between January 10, 2007 to December 12, 2007. Further they organised a secret training camp at Thangalpara, Wagamon within the limits of Mundakayam Police Station, Kottayam (Kerala).

The group was involved in physical training, arms training, firing practices, manufacture of bombs/petrol bombs, motor bike racing, rope climbing practices in the camp

The agency has alleged that the secret training camp was conducted with an intention to train the participants to advocate, incite and abet unlawful, terrorist activities, disrupt communal harmony and causing threat to the sovereignty and integrity of the country.
