The state government is considering making arrangements for live telecast of courtroom proceedings within the court campus at the Gujarat high court and other courts of the state to make it easy for visitors to follow the proceedings. Not only that, the state government is also planning to conduct legal proceedings in Gujarati instead of English even in the high court.

This was announced by the minister of state for law and justice, Pradipsinh Jadeja, in the assembly on Wednesday.

According to the law department, a large number of people visit the courtrooms during the hearing of important legal cases. Sometimes, the presence of a large number of visitors disturbs the court proceedings, Jadeja said. He added that it is also difficult sometimes to accommodate all visitors in a single courtroom.

The state government is, therefore, thinking of a live telecast of courtroom proceedings within the campus of the high court and other courts as well. The arrangement will be similar to that which currently exists at the state assembly for telecast of discussions in the House. Visitors to the court will then be able to see the proceeding from outside the courtroom and understand important legal matters, the minister said.

In another major step for the state judiciary, the state's law department also wants to emphasise the use of the Gujarati language in the conduct of court proceedings as the language can be easily understood by the common man, Jadeja said. He informed the assembly that the state government was now working to promote the use of Gujarati language in judiciary as well.

The law department is actively considering conduct of court proceedings in the Gujarati language in the high court. Currently cases in the high court are conducted only in the English language. Petitioners and respondents have to file their petitions and other legal documents in the high court in the English language.

The law ministry has invited suggestions from experts in this regard. The proceedings, if conducted in Gujarati, can make it easier for the court's lawyers to make their submissions, the minister said, adding that even people who do not know English will then be able to follow legal proceedings correctly.
