Leonie Timmers and Katarzyna Trazpolia took their ‘No Horn Day’ campaign a step further by speaking to the students of St city colleges on Thursday. The two foreign students, interning with NGO Paryavaran Mitra in Ahmedabad, made presentations on noise pollution being a health hazard and steps to avoid it before students of Xavier’s College, Gujarat Law College and Nanavati Law College. They also distributed stickers and wristbands to support their cause.

The attraction of the day, however, was a street play spreading awareness on the hazards of noise pollution, performed by members of the Bodhan Theatre, who belong to the Chhara community. This activity was undertaken by two students of Gujarat University who belong to the community, who are working with children between 10 and 15 years of age in an attempt to better the reputation of their community in society.

“Over the course of the week, we have tried to spread understanding of the effects of noise pollution on human being, animals and the environment. We have also tried to educate students on the legal tools at their disposal, including the Noise Pollution (Regulation and Control) Rules 2000 and a Supreme Court order on noise pollution dated July 18, 2005, which prescribe noise limits,” Timmers said.

On September 5, the students participating in this endeavour will stand at busy roads with posters educating people about unnecessary honking. “We have organised this event to wake people up, to provide that thrust to activities to prevent noise pollution. We also want to encourage self-discipline in order to change this bad habit,” Katarzyna said.

“Paryavaran Mitra is planning to hold meetings with authorities such as the Gujarat Pollution Control Board, AMTS and the rickshaw drivers’ union, to discuss this topic in depth. We are appealing to law students to help us with this initiative,” said Mahesh Pandya, a senior member of the NGO.
