NGO launches campaign to create awareness about domestic violence

Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit today called for concerted efforts to sensitise people about the need to curb the menace of domestic violence against women, at the launch of the 'Bell Bajao!' campaign.

Chief minister Sheila Dikshit today called for concerted efforts to sensitise people in the city about the need to curb the menace of domestic violence against women.
    
"We cannot function in isolation and all of us must take the responsibility to curb this menace of domestic violence against women," Dikshit said, launching a campaign called 'Bell Bajao!'.
   
The campaign is aimed at sensitising over a million people in the city on the need to take action to stop violence against women.
   
The campaign, initiated by an NGO named Breakthrough, will run in Delhi till March 8 and reach people through video vans that will engage and educate communities on the need to prevent domestic violence, and will also spread awareness about the provision of Domestic Violence Act.
   
The van, with its distinctive audio-visual screenings will be accompanied by street theatre performances, puppet shows, opinion polls and interactive games.
    
'Bell Bajao!' is a call to both men and women to work towards changing cultural norms and hold violators liable and bring domestic violence to a halt," said Mallika Dutt, President and CEO of Breakthrough.
   
Elaborating on the campaign, Sonali Khan, India Country Director, for Breakthrough, said, "The Bell Bajao campaign encourages communities specially men and boys to take action against domestic violence and implement the Protection
of Women from Domestic Violence Act (PWDVA)."
   
"We have sensitized people across the country, through mass media, community education and mobilization activities working with multiple stakeholders and hundreds of civil society organizations," she said.
