Nationwide tiger census due in 2010

With nationwide tiger census due to be conducted in 2010 by All India Tiger Authority in collaboration with Wildlife Institute of India (WII) Dehra Dun, national parks are gearing up for the same, a top WII official said here.

A senior scientist at WII, YB Jhala today said that the camera trap technology would be used for tiger census, as it is one of the most reliable and accepted methods.

Jhala added that a three-day training of national park officials from Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Bihar is being organised at Ramnagar, 65 km from here, to share the techniques for tiger census.

The workshop, which started yesterday aims at optimum accuracy for knowing the numbers of tiger in the country, the senior scientist said adding that the representatives of four states would further train their staff after completing the training here at Ramnagar.
