The life of firemen who save others’ lives were in danger on Sunday morning when a part of the roof of the residential quarters of Memnagar fire station collapsed.

Though no injuries were reported, the incident raised questions about the safety of the firemen and their families and the civic body's seriousness in repairing the houses.

Jagdish Yadav, the fireman whose house's roof partially collapsed, said, "The incident happened at 10.50 am when I was on duty. My family was at home when suddenly debris fell from above. Luckily, they were some feet away from the spot where the debris fell or else they would have definitely died."

Yadav further said the renovation work that was carried out some time ago was of inferior quality and was a temporary arrangement.

"A year ago, our house was repaired, but it was a temporary arrangement. They filled up the gaps in the wall and put plaster coating on the roof, but how long could have the old walls sustained such temporary repairs?," asked Yadav.

The incident has caused furore among the firemen who wanted Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation officials to hear their voices.

President of Ahmedabad Municipal Servant Association, Zaheer Pathan, said: "We want to discuss the matter with the civic authorities. Officials should assure us that we will be provided good and strong residential quarters. "

After a long wait, the additional city engineer of west zone, Harpalsingh Jhala, reached the fire station and heard them.

Jhala said, "These buildings are probably around 30-40 years old. The steel bars in the slabs have rusted due to which they expanded and the concrete lump came down. We have already reported that the firemen need new buildings. The report that we have presented is being looked into."

Jhala assured the firemen that the roof will be repaired within three days.
