To provide classrooms for its primary school students more quickly and at a cheaper rate, the Municipal Corporation Delhi (MCD) plans to install pre-fabricated cabins that can be readied in three months' time.

Chairman of MCD Education Committee Mahendra Nagpal said the proposal has been made to the Municipal Commissioner after discussions on the issue of speeding up of construction of classrooms.

"In the traditional method, it takes more time to build a classroom and it costs about Rs5 lakh each. The pre-fabricated rooms take three months and cost Rs3 lakh each. They have a life span of 20-30 years," he said.

MCD at present has 1746 schools with some 9.5 lakh students. About 25% of the schools are still operating out of non—permanent buildings while some are running in tents.
