A Mumbai-based doctor arrested in an extortion case by the Ahmedabad crime branch has allegedly had links with a terrorist organisation and took help from Chhota Rajan gang to extort money from an Ahmedabad-based doctor. The gang planned to kidnap the doctor and former chief minister Amarsinh Chaudhary to extort money to fund Babbar Khalsa International, a terrorist organisation.

The Mumbai doctor has been identified as Dr Piyush Mehta.

According to sources in Detection of Crime Branch (DCB), an extortion case was registered against the members of Chhota Rajan gang in 2002. The gang members, in connivance with the Babbar Khalsa International, had conspired to kidnap Chaudhary and Dr Amit Shah of Ahmedabad to extort huge money from them.

Mehta was managing director of the Mumbai-based diamond company, North Star Gems. He had allegedly sold shares worth Rs2 crore to Shah. However, Sebi prevented the company from completing the transaction. But Mehta kept demanding money from Shah. When Shah refused, Mehta took the help of Chhota Rajan gang members Ashok Anna and Sudhakar.

The police said Mehta, with the help of the gangsters, held a meeting with Shah in the office of Mumbai-based businessman Chandu Faddu and threatened him to pay the money. Further, Mehta had provided all information about Shah to the gangsters, who subsequently threatened Shah to transfer a piece of land in Sanand in the name of the gangsters. The gangsters had also planned to kidnap Shah and Chaudhary to extort money to fund the terrorist organisation.
