Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav today said he was against formation of smaller states, including Gorkhaland, as their governments generally had a 'weak' grip on the administration.

"We are opposed to smaller states. Their governments have a weak grip on the administration," he told reporters when asked to comment on the killing of All India Gorkha League president Madan Tamang in Darjeeling on Friday.

Tamang, a vocal opponent of the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha spearheading the Gorkhaland movement in Darjeeling, was killed allegedly by activists of the GJM which had earlier threatened to banish him from the hills.

Problems like Maoism originated and spread from the smaller states, Yadav pointed out, adding that his party had opposed when the move to carve out a smaller state from Uttar Pradesh was initiated.

Yadav was addressing a press conference on the last day of his party's three-day national council meeting.
