Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Mulayam Singh used the party’s national convention in Agra on Wednesday to launch a rather unexpected attack on the UPA government, dubbing it a “complete failure” and even targeting prime minister Manmohan Singh directly, calling him “unreliable”.

Speaking at the inaugural session of the three-day convention, Mulayam surprised even his own party leaders with his scathing criticism of the UPA government. Be it foreign policy, internal security or prices, the SP chief went all out to lambast the Centre, only stopping short of declaring withdrawal of support to the UPA regime. He even said the convention would consider whether to continue support.

“This government has failed on all counts… the common man is worst hit by the continuous rise in prices… this government does not have the courage to take action [against hoarders and black-marketers],” Mulayam said. “If a Samajwadi government comes to power in Delhi, we will implement a daam bandho (price control) policy.”

He said the UPA government’s promise of bringing about change within 100 days was incredible. “Prime minister Manmohan Singh’s word can’t be trusted any more… he had guaranteed 1 crore jobs in 100 days, 90 days have passed but nothing concrete has been done in this regard,” he said.

Mulayam pointed out the recent Indo-Pak joint declaration at Sharm El-Sheikh (Egypt) as a “major foreign policy failure”. He said the PM had failed to protect the dignity of the country and had compromised on national interest by letting Pakistan have its way.
“On one side, Pakistan is hounding us and on the other, China is preparing to attack us… it is unfortunate that the UPA government is so indecisive,” he said.

Mulayam also attacked the UPA government on its flagship scheme, the National Rural Employment Guarantee Programme. “It’s a good scheme, but it has been marred by corruption… most central schemes open doors to corruption… government funds are siphoned off while the poor continue to live in misery,” he said.

Mulayam reserved the same treatment for the Mayawati government, too. “The CM is busy putting up her statues… what development can one expect in this situation,” he lamented.
