NCP today adopted tough posture against ally Congress over dissolution of the board of Maharashtra State Co-operative Bank (MSCB), at its state unit's extended working committee's meeting here.

"NCP has the power to give a befitting reply when warranted," a senior minister said at the meeting, party sources said.

"Today, we are keeping quiet. It does not mean that we have been demoralised," the minister said, as quoted by the sources.

The remarks come amid simmering differences between the ruling allies, with NCP blaming Congress for the bank's dissolution, alleging a "political angle" to the RBI's order.

The apex bank recently dissolved the MSCB board, controlled by the NCP, based on a report prepared by NABARD which pointed out various irregularities. Administrators have been appointed to the bank subsequently.

Today's meeting, held at Y B Chavan Pratisthan here, was chaired by state NCP president Madhukar Pichad.

Congress, however, downplayed the reported remarks at the NCP meet. "There is no need to say all sorts of things. Whatever action was taken, was taken by the RBI," said MPCC spokesperson, Husain Dalwai.
