SHILLONG: Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister Mukul Sangma on Friday resigned from the Congress-led government.

All India Congress Committee secretary Mabel Rebello said in the state capital that Sangma, holding the Home and Education portfolios in the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance government, owned moral responsibility for last Friday's firing and resigned.

Sangma, one of two deputy chief ministers in the Lapang cabinet, submitted the resignation letter to the chief minister in Rebello's presence.

The firing by police and Central Reserve Police Force at Tura and Williamnagar in the Garo hills region claimed nine lives and injured more than 100 people.
