It was a gathering of brave men in khaki at the award distribution ceremony of Gujarat police on Wednesday, where 177 policemen of various ranks were feted for their exemplary show of valour while on duty.

The medals included five bravery medals, two Jeevan Raksha medals, 13 Vishishth Seva medals, 154 Exemplary Service medals. The recipients included 23 IPS officers including 19 DySPs, 36 PIs, 17 PSIs, 22 ASIs, 36 head constables, 20 constables and one AIO.

JCP sector 2, IPS officer Atul Karwal; JCP Crime, Mohan Jha; addl DG PC Thakur; jail superintendent, RJ Parghi; ATS chief, Manoj Shashidharan; DySP Sarkhej, RK Patel; DySP RK Bhuva; Sola police inspector VK Jhala; DySP Ahmedabad rural HQ, KS Savani; PSI BP Roziya of crime branch, Ahmedabad city; retd addl DG AI Saiyyed; Rajkot commissioner, Geetha Johri; IPS Shivanand Jha; and Surat commissioner Rakesh Asthana were among the many well-known faces who received the President's medal under various categories.

While 3 officers - ASI Madhurkar Shinde, Gangadhar Patil and Ranjitsinh Chawla -were awarded the medals posthumously, head constable Rasiya Katara and constable Javed Sumara received 'Jeevan Raksha' medals for rescuing lives of three labourers and one child during floods in Junagadh.

PSI BP Roziya of crime branch had arrested a notorious bootlegger from Vadodara, during his posting at the place in 2007. The bootlegger had assaulted the cop, but the latter held on to the criminal and eventually arrested him.

RV Asari, who was awarded the medal for gallantry, was surrounded along with other commuters by robbers on NH 8 near Karjan in 2002. The cop fired three rounds and could arrest the robbers. After this, 13 others were arrested and numerous crimes were solved.

In the attack on Akshardham temple on September 24, 2002, in Gandhinagar, now retd addl DG VV Rabari rescued 400 people stranded on the temple premises.
