NEW DELHI: In a bid to revamp the healthcare system in India, the government has decided to upgrade 13 medical institutions, including Mumbai’s JJ Medical College Hospital.

This is to create better medical facilities for patients in their own states and ease out pressure on super-specialty hospitals like the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS).

The government is also utilising this opportunity to increase the number of seats for MBBS and PG to fulfill its promise to protesting students after more reservation for OBCs in higher and technical institutions was declared.

While the govt has announced its decision to set up six more AIIMS-like institutions, these 13 existing institutions will be upgraded to the level of AIIMS at a total cost of Rs 1,560 crore.
