The summer phase of marriage season has begun and party plots and marriage halls are abuzz with activity. For a few, this is an opportune time to get marry or attend such ceremonies due to the ongoing summer vacation. And city police too are stricken by this seasonal 'flu', with scores of cops going on leave for marriages.

While the city police are on their toes to check the increasing incidents of house-breaks, chain snatching, nabbing impostors posing as cops and other crimes, more than 15% of their personnel, ranging from constables to police inspectors, are on leave.

The main reason: a marriage in their families or among relatives, say sources in various police stations of city. City police have strength of 8,000 personnel and out of them, more than 1,000 are on leave presently, police sources say. With such a large number of their colleagues proceeding on leave at a time, those who are left behind for the job are stretched to limits.

The have to put in extra overs to ensure that the policing remains unaffected in the city, a few constables said, putting on brave faces.

The zone-I police who have jurisdiction in the posh areas like, Satellite, Ellisbridge, Navrangpura, Naranpura, Vastrapur etc, are the worst hit. Almost 25% of their force at nine police stations and a police inspector are on leave, said a police official.

A few police stations of the zone, which registers highest number complaints, have as many as a third of their cops on leave.

However, to get leave sanctioned is not all that easy for everyone in the department.

"I have been trying for the last three days to have my leave granted, but to no avail. I have a marriage to attend. What do I do now?" begrudged a constable at a police station in zone-I.

Sources added that even citizens have sometimes to face a little inconvenience due to this temporary staff shortage at police stations.
