Criticising the Centre for its "failure" to check inflation, the Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) on Friday claimed that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had "lost his grip" on the economy and accused him of "lying" about petroleum products' price hike.

"The Congress led government has increased the prices of petrol seven times in the past 13 months and its price has gone upto Rs68 per litre. The prices of diesel, kerosene oil and cooking gas have also been increased putting a huge burden on the common people," senior leader Rajnath Singh told a public rally at Haridwar. He kickstarted the BJP's election campaign in Uttarakhand.

"However, the Prime Minister and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi are lying to the people by saying that it had to be done due to increase in prices of crude oil in international market," said the former BJP president, recently appointed as the election incharge of Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh.

Singh pointed that the prices of petrol in neighbouring Pakistan, Bangladesh and Srilanka are only Rs47 per litre and 'they have successfully managed to control the prices of petroleum products'.

He said the Centre has failed completely to check inflation and the common man is unable to manage his family budget.

"The Congress will have to give an answer to the people of the country as to why the inflation always goes up when they are in power," he said.

Singh blamed corruption and black money stashed in foreign banks by politicians, bureaucrats and corporate houses for poverty and unemployment in the country.

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank accused the centre of discriminating against the state.

The Centre scrapped the Concessional Industrial Package to the hill state given by the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government, lowered the quota of foodgrains and cooking gas and was delaying the sanctioning of various projects, Nishank alleged.

Listing his government's achievements, Nishank asked the people to return the BJP government to power as it can work for the betterment and development of the state.
