A hidden camera installed near west Delhi's Tilak Nagar helped in arresting a man who used to rob people using public rest rooms, police said today.

The arrested has been identified as Jitender, 24, and a country-made pistol has been recovered from him.

The hidden camera was installed on a tree near the boundary wall of the police station recently after a man was robbed of his cash near the facility.

"In order to prevent repetition of similar crime there and in order to detect the earlier reported crime, it was decided a hidden camera be placed there," V Renganathan, deputy commissioner of police (west), said. A constant watch 24X7 was kept for several days and movement of each person was watched.

Last night, the duty officer who was monitoring the hidden camera footage noticed that a person has been hanging around the toilet for about more than 40-45 minutes and was frequently entering and coming out of the toilet.

"It was further observed that this person used to enter the restroom whenever any passerby entered it and would come following the user. He informed about the presence of the man to a police team," Renganathan said.

On being questioned, he had no answer as to why he was hanging in and around the toilet for 40-45 minutes.  He was frisked and checked and found to be in possession of a loaded country made pistol of .315 bore.

He told police revealed that he had come there to rob the belongings of any of the users who seemed to carry a bag.
