A man, who allegedly strangled woman moneylender on the behest of another woman, was arrested in north-east Delhi, police said today.

Suraj, hailing from Bahadurgarh in Haryana, was apprehended when he came to Sonia Vihar last Tuesday on a tip-off that a man involved in the killing of one Sarla in Uttar Pradesh's Ghaziabad will come to the locality.

He allegedly told police that one Sudha gave him contract for killing the woman, S Sanjay Kumar Mishra, deputy commissioner of police (northeast), said.

"Sarla was into moneylending and had given a loan to Sudha who failed to return  the borrowed amount. Sarla was pressurising her return the money and this led to Sudha planning to kill her. She hired Suraj whom she knew well and offered good amount," he said.

The deceased's brother had on January 1 approached Noida police and lodged a complaint that his sister had returned home since she went out to meet one Sudha on December 29.

On January 3, Sarla's body was recovered from a sugarcane field in Murad Nagar in Uttar Pradesh and some wine bottles were also found on the spot.

"Initially, Suraj tried to conceal his identity but on sustained questioning broke down and confessed to the killing," Mishra said.

A country made pistol and two live cartridges were allegedly recovered from him.

Further investigation of the murder case will be carried out by the Uttar Pradesh police.
