Magnitude 6.4 quake hits off Andamans: USGS

The US Geological Survey said the quake struck at 1.21 am on Tuesday 75 miles (120 km) east of Port Blair at a depth of 79.4 miles (127.7 km).

A magnitude 6.4 quake struck Andaman Islands and triggered a local tsunami warning, the US Geological Survey and Pacific Tsunami Warning Center reported on Monday.                     

The USGS said the quake struck at 1.21 am on Tuesday 75 miles (120 km) east of Port Blair at a depth of 79.4 miles (127.7 km).   

"Earthquakes of this size sometimes generate local tsunamis that can be destructive along coasts located within a few hundred kilometers (miles) of the earthquake epicenter," the tsunami warning center said.
