VVIPS in our country are using more than five LPG cylinders per month, even as the government is pushing hard to implement the recommendations of Nandan Nilekani’s report on LPG cylinder subsidy -- only four to six cylinders per family per year at subsidised rate.
Some ministers have even got two or more connections against their name on the same address. For the common man, however, it’s illegal to have two connections against the same name.
The transparency portal for LPG, launched by the ministry of petroleum and natural gas, on Friday showed how Union ministers and chief ministers have been abusing their special status and overusing and misusing the subsidised LPG.

Interestingly, some ‘ghosts’ are also taking advantage of the subsidised LPG in Lutyens Zone. In the past one year, 48 cylinders have been sent for late PM Chandra Shekhar Singh.
Union agriculture minister Sharad Pawar gets 31 cylinders annually, while DMK MP and former telecom minister A Raja, who has stayed in jail for most part of the previous year, too has somehow managed to use 47 cylinders from June 2011 to May 2012.
Retired IPS officer KPS Gill has used as many as 79 cylinders in the past one year, while former CJI KG Balakrishnana has used 60.
A common household can get a second cylinder only after 21 days from the last booking, but the rule doesn’t seem to apply to ministers and other VIPs. However, in an attempt to save face, the petroleum ministry hurriedly issued a press release, which said there was no cap on the number of cylinders a consumer can book in a month.
