The winter session of Lok Sabha is likely to be adjourned sine die on Friday and Rajya Sabha on Monday. The session was originally scheduled to last till December 21, but there has apparently been a rethink now, with most MPs disinclined to return for only one day on Monday.

The government has almost exhausted all official business listed for this session. Both houses were to meet on Monday for PM Manmohan Singh’s statement on his return from the climate summit in Copenhagen.

In fact, it was the BJP that was insisting on the PM’s statement. But given the mood of the MPs, all parties, including the BJP, believe there is little point in asking the MPs to come back for another day. Even floor managers are not sure of proper attendance on Monday.

The Lok Sabha has not transacted much business in the last two days. On Wednesday, Left and SP MPs forced an adjournment over price rise and on Thursday MPs from Andhra once again create a bedlam over Telangana.

Most political parties have rescheduled their meetings in view of likely house adjournment on Friday. The BJP parliamentary party meeting is scheduled for Friday evening, where Advani is likely to step down a leader of the Opposition. The Congress party will most likely shelve its customary parliament party meeting till the next session.
