Lalu warns of 'war' over women's reservation bill in Parliament

"Call leaders of all political parties" to discuss the bill, the RJD supremo said while participating in a discussion on Motion of Thanks to president for her address in Parliament.

Warning the government of stiff resistance to the Women's Reservation Bill, RJD supremo Lalu Prasad today demanded that an all party meeting be convened to arrive at a concensus on the contentious issue.

"Call leaders of all political parties" to discuss the Bill, he said while participating in a discussion on Motion of Thanks to president for her address in Parliament.

At a time when women are "weeping" due to rising prices of essential commodities, the government is trying to bring in Women Reservation Bill, he said, adding "we will oppose it... yudh hoga (there will be war on the issue)".

"Mahila bill hatao; desh ko bachhao (withdraw Women's Bill and save the country)", Prasad said aloud.

"The country's president is a woman, Lok Sabha speaker is a woman, Congress president and UPA chairperson is also a woman and they have not come here through the women's quota," he said.

Supporting RJD's stand, Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Singh Yadav said "we will not support the bill in the present form as we want it to have a provision for the OBC".

BJD MP Kalikesh Singhdeo said his party was in favour of the bill. "Our party supports the bill in its present form," he added.

The government has decided to take up the bill in the Rajya Sabha on March 8.
