A visa and immigration consultant was kidnapped and then released by four men after they received a ransom of Rs1.5 lakh from his female business partner. The entire incident transpired within a matter of hours on Monday.

In a complaint to the Naranpura police, one Devdutt Raval, a visa consultant alleged that he was kidnapped by his sub-agent, one Maulik and four others near Ashram Road on Monday afternoon. After kidnapping him in a Bolero SUV, Raval was held for over seven hours and only released after his business partner Shital Nirvani paid a ransom of Rs1.5 lakh.

Raval, a resident of Patan, works as a visa consultant in the city. His job involves sending people to Malaysia on work visas. He had started the consultancy with help from his local partner Shital.

Raval stated that he and Shital had gone to Kualalumpur, Malaysia two weeks ago to meet their sub-agents working there. During the visit, their Ahmedabad-based sub-agent Maulik, who provided them clients on a commission basis, called seeking help.

Maulik asked Raval to help two of his Indian clients, who were supposed to go to Canada, but were stuck in Malaysia due to some immigration issues. In return, Maulik had promised to provide two more clients to Raval.

After returning to the country on December 20, Raval and Shital came to the city on December 22. He had stayed at a hotel on Anandnagar Road, while she went to her residence.

Raval then reminded Maulik of his promise for two clients. Maulik agreed to meet him near Hotel Fortune Landmark at 4:30 pm on Monday. When Raval reached the spot, the sub-agent allegedly took him near Usmanpura Garden to on the pretext of meeting clients.

According to Raval, Maulik asked him to sit in a Bolero. Once inside the SUV, Maulik and three other men thrashed him, he alleged.

Raval was then held captive and roughed up in the moving car over the next seven hours and finally asked to pay Rs2.5 lakh as ransom. Raval then had no option but to call Shital asking her to reach the Gurudwara on SG Road, with the ransom set at Rs1.5 lakh.

Shital reached the pre-decided spot in her car at 11:30 pm, and handed over the money to Maulik from her car window. Following this, the kidnappers threw Raval out of the SUV and sped off in such a rush that Raval was unable to even see the number plate of the Bolero.

After receiving Raval's compliant late in the night, the Naranpura police reached Shital's residence at Chitrakut Bungalows on Sola Road to investigate the case. However, they only met her husband, Ramesh there. He told the officials that Shital no longer lived with him since Diwali. The cops now find themselves in a spot as Shital's phone number is switched off as well.
