Kalpana Bhatt was re-elected as the deputy mayor of Ahmedabad at the monthly board meeting of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation on Wednesday. It is Bhatt's third term as the deputy mayor.

The Congress's candidate for the post was Bhanu Makawana. However, as the BJP has more than two third majority in the AMC, the election was a mere formality.  On behalf of the BJP, Madhu Patel proposed the name of Bhatt as the deputy mayor. It was supported by Hasmukh Patel.

Bhanu Makawana's name was proposed by Congress's Hasankhan Pathan and it was supported by Naran Patel.  Both the parties asked the support of the other party to unanimously elect their candidates. But neither the BJP nor the Congress honoured each others request.

"It is sure the your candidate is not going to win. So why don't you support us and
create history," said Madhu Patel while advocating Bhatt's candidature for deputy mayor.  Reacting to this, former mayor Himmatsinh Patel said, "Bhatt is undoubtedly the perfect candidate but then why did the BJP not name her as the mayor when the post was reserved for post was reserved for women candidates a few years ago."
