Authorities at Kakrapar atomic power station on Wednesday claimed to have made significant changes in working style at all levels.

Apart from technical training, psychological training is being provided to staff to prevent recurrence of an incident like the one in which seven workers were exposed to radiation two months back.

Things have changed a lot in the past 72 hours after the incident came to light through media reports. Authorities at the atomic power station have adopted new working methodology.

Officials have created check-points and added responsibilities in the working module. Besides this, personnel employed in the control room - which handles entire system of refueling the reactors _ are being given refresher training.

“We have fixed responsibility of officials handling control room. Till now, the supervisor had the power to operate the control room, but now he has to take permission from two layered official structure. This will ensure safety and trace out if any unwanted incident occurs,” said PK Dutta, station director. Dutta became speechless when asked about the reason for the entire incident. He termed it as human blunder, which has damaged image of power station.

“I can’t understand how this happened, when staff deployed is trained and well-versed with the entire operating procedure. We are providing him psychological training to improve his working efficiency,” Dutta added. Meanwhile officials from AERB (Atomic Energy Regulatory Board) visited Kakrapar. They visited the tunnel, where workers came in contact with radiation and took statements of workers. It is learnt that AERB has given clean chit to power station for the incident.

On Wednesday, evening, Tapi district collector RJ Patel visited Kakrapar and took stock of the episode. He held meeting with top officials of atomic power station and sough clarification from them. Sources said that state government has also taken serious note of the incident.

Workers, who suffered radiation while working in the tunnel, alleged power station officials for not paying attention towards their issues. They claimed that power station officials were not offering regular work to them.

"After the radiation incident, we were provided job for 45 days. After that the officials said that we are not fit for laborious job and so should take rest for few days. We were offered smaller jobs, having less pay. When we asked for pay hike  or compensation, they bluntly refused," Dilesh Chaudhry, one of the seven workers, who suffered radiation, said.

Chaudhry said they then decided to approach the district collector.
Workers exposed to radiation also complained of health problems. "I am suffering from back pain and pain in both legs. This has started after I came in contact with radiation.  We have been doing similar job for past 14 years, but never had suffered such problem," Bachhu Chaudhry, another worker, said.
