The medical board examining CPI(M) patriarch, Jyoti Basu on Saturday spared the last two medication procedures - Slow Low-Efficiency Daily (Sled) Dialysis and maximum ventilation. However, none of the procedures could give any positive indication of bringing Basu out of his critical phase of multi-organ failure.

According to a spokesman of the hospital where Basu is under treatment two consecutive normal haemodialysis was conducted on Basu on Thursday and Friday. "However, there was not much improvement and considering the advanced stage of Basu, the medical board decided to shift to Sled dialysis," he said.

Explaining the process, a medical expert said that in the process of internal waste removal in Sled dialysis is much slower that what it is in normal haemodialysis and hence the impact on the person on whom it is applied is much lesser.

"Generally normal haemodialysis takes place for four hours, where in case of Sled-dialysis the time taken is eight hours," he said.

He also said that the Sled-dialysis is the last treatment resort and is done on terminally critical patients where other medication procedures have failed.

Officially confirming for the first time that Basu is at the stage of multi-organ failure have become evident, the hospital spokesman said that he has been currently put under maximum ventilation. "However, his condition is extremely critical," the spokesman said.  He also said that the medical dose to improve his blood-pressure level has also been multiplied substantially.

The chief of the medical board, Dr AK Maity said that the five vital organs of Basu's body which are witnessing failure syndromes include heart, kidney, lungs, lever and brain. "The unconsciousness level has also increased," he said.

On Saturday afternoon, mega film star, Amitabh Bachchan visited the hospital and prayed for Basu's speedy recovery. Others visiting the hospital included CPI(M) general secretary, Prakash Karat, former Lok Sabha speaker, Somnath Chattaopadhyay and former West Bengal chief minister and Basu's long-time friend, Siddhartha Shankar Roy.
