Janata Dal (United) which failed to open its account in Uttar Pradesh despite contesting 200 seats today attacked NDA ally BJP for "breaking" the alliance in the state and admitted to a "rift" between the parties.

KC Tyagi, JD(U)'s General Secretary and a close confidant of party chief Sharad Yadav, accused the BJP of being selective on alliances during state polls.

Asked whether the results of Uttar Pradesh poll, where BJP decided to contest separately, will impact their relations, he said, "Rift has already come (between us). In Uttar Pradesh, the BJP lost both the election and its alliance with JD(U)."

Trends in Uttar Pradesh were basically against Congress, but BJP too doesn't have reasons to be happy. Its share of votes in the state has gone down and it must rethink over its strategy to contest alone, Tyagi said.

The JD(U) and the BJP decided to contest outside the NDA banner in the state after the two parties failed to arrive at a seat sharing agreement there.

Stating that the party will raise the issue with BJP during the next meeting of NDA allies, Tyagi said, "You cannot be so selective for alliances in the states. Just like Uttar Pradesh, BJP contested separately in Karnataka. Perhaps they intend to do so in other states as well."

The meeting of NDA allies is due sometime after Holi and before the beginning of Budget session of Parliament this month.

On whether the Uttar Pradesh poll results will impact their alliance with BJP in Bihar, he said, "In Bihar the alliance is running successfully only because of the magnanimity of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar."

Party Chief Sharad Yadav before beginning his election campaign in the state had said JD(U) would strive to make development the axis of poll campaign in Uttar Pradesh and will present before people the example of Nitish Kumar ruled Bihar as well as the party's clean political history.

Yadav is also the NDA Convenor.

Tyagi said that had BJP contested the polls under the NDA banner, "it would have helped in maintaining a positive atmosphere.

"I cannot comment on the number of votes and seats we could have possibly got, but it would have not maligned the environment and the relations of two parties," he said.
