The BJP may not have read his book, but Jaswant Singh’s Jinnah-India, Partition, Independence is set to launch him into the top league of India’s non-fiction writers. In the last just three days, bookshops across the Capital have sold hundreds of copies of the book.

Singh’s expulsion from the BJP could have triggered increased interest in the book and the resulting overwhelming response, say bookshop owners. “The controversy has definitely helped generate interest. We have already sold 150 copies. Most buyers bought the copies immediately after the launch,” said an executive of Bahri Sons in Khan Market. A popular destination for Delhi’s intellectuals and socialites, the shop had stocked over 100 copies in advance. “We expect the sale to go up further after his (Jaswant’s) expulsion,” said the shop executive.

Oxford bookstore, too, confirmed heightened interest in the book. “The buyers are especially coming to buy this book because of the recent controversy,” said an attendant at the bookstore.

The Book Shop at Jorbagh market plans to stock up more copies at the earliest. Its owner, Nimi Singh, said, “Sale of the book has picked up in the last three days.”
The book is also making waves in Shimla, where BJP’s chintan baithak is on. Ashok Kumar Kinger, owner of the popular Asian Book House, said, “I have been in this trade for 40 years but have never anything like this. Even Salman Rushdie’s Midnight’s Children or Taslima Nasreen’s Lajja never generated this kind of response in just 2 days.”

Mumbai, too, is reading  Jaswant.  A spokesperson at Oxford bookstore in Churchgate said they got the books on Tuesday and ran out of stock by Thursday. “We’ve now ordered for another stock,” the spokesperson said.At the Strand bookstall in Fort, too, the book is fast running out of stock.

“We’ve sold over 200 copies and are expecting another 200 by Friday evening,”said PM Shenvi, the bookstore manager. The scene is no different at Landmark in Andheri (West). “The book’s been on our shelves for the past five days. But it’s selling really well in the last 2 days,” said a spokesperson.
