The scene was one of utter chaos and confusion, at the municipal schools and ward offices where citizens queued up to check their names on the voters' lists of the upcoming municipal elections.

Some found their names missing, some others detected faulty residential addresses and yet others saw glaring mistakes in their ages and details of family members.

'Ghumte reh jaaoge' summed up the plight of Prakash Trivedi, a resident of Usmanpura who visited half a dozen schools and offices to check his name in the voters' list.

"In the Lok sabha elections, Usmanpura falls under the Sabarmati constituency, but during Vidhan Sabha elections, it is included under the Wadaj ward. I visited CU Shah college, Usmanpura office, the ward office and a couple of schools to check for mine and my family members' names, but didn't find them," said a disgruntled Trivedi, adding that whenever he approached teachers and officials, they kept sending him to one venue after the other.

A resident of Uddhavnagar in Wadaj, Varsha Mehra, was aghast to know that for the first time in the past 25 years, her name was missing from the voters' list. "I have been living in Wadaj for the last 25 years, and my name has always appeared on the voters' lists. This time though, even as my husband's name is very much there, mine is missing," said Mehra.

One of the teachers posted at a municipal school in Usmanpura said that the lists are not being updated despite several requests from citizens.
