With the arrest of two Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) spies on Sunday, sleuths of Detection of Crime Branch (DCB) opened a can of worms literally in what appears to be a large-scale espionage network. Police have unearthed that of the two, Sirajuddin Fakir, 22, is allegedly the kingpin, who not only stays in touch with ISI sub-agents deployed in the army establishments of Punjab, Maharashtra and Rajasthan, but is in fact, the one who co-ordinates them!

Mohammad Ayub aka Sakir Shaikh, 23, only did all the technical work of sending across the information Fakir collected.

The police will now investigate his mobile call history to reach to others involved in the chain. This is especially crucial with regard to finding out about the sub-agents in other states. Fakir allegedly passed on the information to Tahir alias Janu who controls the ISI network in Pakistan. Fakir was also in charge of making payments to these sub-agents.

Soon after Fakir’s arrest, DCB’s office in Gaekwad Haveli, Jamalpur was flooded with calls from officers of various departments like Army Intelligence, Air-force Intelligence and Central Intelligence Bureau. Details of Fakir’s alleged conversations with army people have been given to Army Intelligence Bureau. The army will now initiate a probe on the role of people deployed in army cantonment area, who were directly or indirectly involved in this matter.

During investigation, a lot of documents written in English were recovered from Fakir’s house, though he claims to have studied only till class 7. The writing and language appears to be those of superior officers. Cops are trying to find out if Fakir had written any of the hand-written notes. If not, they will search for the person who wrote them.

Fakir appears crude in his mannerisms as well as dressing sense. The ACP of DCB, Nirlipt Rai said, “The arrest of the accused is very crucial for DCB. He is smart and isn’t giving out information easily.”

Manhunt launched for another accused
Another suspect has emerged in the case — Sohail, a resident of Jamalpur — who earlier did the work of sending information like Shaikh. However, Sohail demanded more money and hence, Shaikh replaced him. Cops are now searching for Sohail.

Fakir not revealing much
The police are sceptical that Fakir does not know English. Police even spoke in English among themselves to check if he understood what they said or even react to their conversation, which allegedly he did. They suspect he has a lot more knowledge than what he has so far confessed.
