A day after break-ins at three jewellery showrooms, a bank and a forex outlet, the city police directed jewellers to install their own CCTV cameras and security systems. At a meeting with jewellers on Friday, police warned them of legal action if they failed to follow security norms.

The police commissioner had earlier issued a notification making it mandatory for jewellers to install CCTV cameras and security systems in their showrooms or shops. On Friday, officials at different police stations met jewellers from their area to explain security measures they should take to prevent the increasing incidence of burglaries.

On Thursday morning, three unidentified persons broke into Shrungar Jewellers on CG Road and made away with gold and diamond jewellery worth Rs 73 lakh. Police said the same gang also targeted two more jewellery shops __ one at Panchvati and another at Satellite  _ besides a Bank of Jaipur- Bikaner branch and Meera Forex, and stole laptops.

Deputy commissioner of police Sharad Singhal said investigation in the case had been transferred to the crime branch, but the police from zone 1 and zone 2 would help with the probe.

The modus operandi in the burglaries has led police to suspect the involvement of Chikhlikar gang. “A white car is seen in the CCTV footage at a petrol pump on CG Road. We will check the footage to confirm if the persons in the car are the same as those caught on CCTV camera in one of the jewellery showrooms,” said Singhal.
