Infectious diseases break out in Surat

Rains have yet to descend on the city in their intensity, but Surtis have started to fall ill of infectious diseases which generally break out post rains. In last three days, more than 44 people of various localities have been infected of cholera, gastro-enteritis, diarrhoea and similar diseases. But the civic health department is denying outbreak of any epidemic in the city.

Areas like Pandesara, Unn, Limbayat, Bhatena and Katargam have a number of patients suffering from various diseases. After repeated complaints from all areas, Surat Municipal Corporation conducted a survey in all big hospitals in the city on Saturday and Sunday. To its surprise, more than three dozens patients were found to have been admitted in just last two days! On Monday, the third day, seven more cases of gastro and one case of diarrhea were detected in the city.

According to figures given by the civic body, 26 cases of gastro-enteritis, seven cases of diarrhoea, three cases of cholera and viral fever and four cases of fever have been registered in various hospitals in these two days. One person died of gastro on Sunday, while a seven-year-old girl in Pandesara was found infected with the same disease. However, these are the figures is of those who have been admitted to hospitals. There are a large number of patients suffering from these diseases who are under private treatment. Sources in new Civil hospital and SMIMER said that more than 30 patients each visit their hospital daily, but this figure is never revealed. These patients are discharged after primary treatment and hence remain unregistered.

Even though people are getting infected, officials of civic health department deny any outbreak in the city. "These numbers are normal and based on them we cannot conclude that there is an epidemic of infectious diseases. We are keeping a watch and will take action as required by the situation," Hemant Desai, in-charge municipal commissioner of SMC, said.
