Panaji: The role of the Indian mission in Oman in helping Indian women in trouble was appreciated by Goa's NRI Commissioner Eduardo Faleiro today. He said that the Embassy in Oman has arranged a shelter for Indian women but the inmates complain of harassment by their employers there.
Faleiro, a former minister of state for external affairs, said once these women move out of their employers' house alleging harassment, the employer lodged a police complaint and they cannot be repatriated till the case was over. The women should be allowed to stay in the shelter till the case was over, he said.
"Where will they go? Hence this concept of shelter was conceived," Faleiro told a press conference here.
Faleiro is back after attending the Global Goans' Convention in Oman which was organised by Goa NRI Commissionerate and Goan Community in Oman (GCO). Replying to a question, he said that at times the fault was that of employee and not employer in some cases.
India has put stringent restrictions that make it difficult for woman less than 35 years in getting employment in the Gulf countries as a domestic worker.
"Pakistan and Nepal have already banned sending its citizens as domestic workers in Gulf Countries," Faleiro said.
The Global Goans Convention (GGC) also deliberated about the various problems faced by domestic workers and the Indian embassy in Oman offered on-the-spot help for the beleaguered Indians.
"I must place on record a high appreciation of the Indian embassy in Oman for the work they have done. There are many measures in place including 24 into 7 helpline for the Indian citizens there," Faleiro said. He stated that twice a week free legal advice was provided while once a week, the embassy interacted with the Indians there.
Faleiro said that the next global Goans convention would be held in Melbourne, Australia, where there are 22,000 Goans residing.
