Incessant rains in Gujarat, J&K; 4 killed

Torrential rains struck Gujarat claiming four lives and disrupting rail and air traffic while most parts of north India, except Jammu and Kashmir, witnessed subdued rainfall activity today.

Heavy rains virtually brought Ahmedabad in Gujarat to a standstill as the city was lashed by 130 mm of overnight rains that marooned low-lying areas.

Four people were killed when a portion of a building collapsed at Dudeshwar area. Ten trains were cancelled and nine others got delayed as railway tracks were submerged. Operations at the Sardar Patel Airport were hampered due to water logging.

Meanwhile, warm weather conditions returned to parts of north India, especially the national capital which saw the maximum settling at 36.6 deg C, three notches above normal.

The city, which recorded no rainfall, also witnessed the minimum rising to 28.6 deg C, two notches above normal while the humidity levels oscillated between 81 and 54%.

The states of Punjab and Haryana also experienced sultry weather conditions with Hisar braving a hot day at 38 degrees, up by three notches than yesterday.

Elsewhere in the region, Ambala recorded a high of 35.9 deg C, Ludhiana 35.4 deg C, Chandigarh 35.3 deg C and Patiala 35 degrees. The maximum in Amritsar, which recorded 8 mm of rains, settled at 34.8 deg C, one degree above normal.

Meanwhile, heavy rains lashed Jammu region, where authorities sounded an alert about the possibility of flash floods and evacuated people living near swollen rivers. Four persons, who got trapped in flood waters for several hours in Budgam district, were rescued. A cloudburst struck Wado village in Kargil district causing massive damage.

In Rajasthan, many areas received light to moderate rains though the mercury settled slightly above the normal ranges. While Sanchore was drenched by 10 cm overnight rainfall, Arthuna, Veza and Kanwa recorded 9 cm, 8 cm and 7 cm rainfall respectively.

In Uttar Pradesh, despite scattered rainfall at a few places, major rivers continued to flow close to the danger levels at many districts.
