A college student committed suicide by jumping into the Sabarmati river early on Saturday morning, while on her way to college. This was the second suicide by a college girl in Ahmedabad in as many days.

Sanjana Mahavar, a student of the BD Arts College, took the extreme step at around 7 am on Saturday. In her suicide note, she asked that, as she did not want to embarrass her parents, the reason for her suicide should not be disclosed to the media.

IM Pathan, the investigating officer, said that Mahavar’s body was found in the part of the river adjoining Navrangpura, following which the police were informed through the control room. The fire brigade immediately arrived at the spot, but failed to save her life. “We have seized her schoolbag, mobile phone and identity card,” Pathan said.

In the suicide note, which is with the police, Mahavar said she committed suicide of her own will and that no one should be blamed for forcing her to take the step. She further said in the note: “I don’t want to harass my parents.”

Shisupal Mahavar, the girl’s uncle, was contacted and came to receive her body. The police have registered a case of accidental death and are investigating the matter.
