In-laws set woman ablaze in Ahmedabad

A woman was allegedly set on fire by her in-laws on Friday after a heated argument ensued between them.

A woman was allegedly set afire by her in-laws on Thursday night in the wee hours of Friday for a shocking reason. Her in-laws were reportedly trying to get rid of her so that they could remarry their son to the victim's sister-in-law.

According to Sola police officials, Vilasben Harijan, resident of Malai Talavna Chapar in Thaltej lodged an FIR against her in-laws Ratanben and Shankar Harijan. In the FIR she accused them of tormenting her for the last two years.

"Vilas's in-laws were not happy with Vilas for common domestic reasons. They wanted their widow daughter-in-law Guddi to marry Vilas's husband Bharat," said Sola police inspector VK Zala.

According to the FIR, Vilasben married Bharat Harijan four years ago and for the last two years she was being mentally and physically harassed for various reasons and dowry as well.

On Friday an argument ensued between Vilasben and her in-laws. Zala said that the in-laws wanted to oust Vilasben so that they could marry their son Bharat to Guddi. "In the middle of the brawl Vilasben, in a state of anger, poured kerosene on herself. In the meantime, her in-laws set her on fire. The incident took place at 2:30 am on Friday.

She was admitted to a hospital where her condition is said to be critical," police said. They also said that one of the accused has been arrested late on Friday night.
