"IITs have lost their sheen and have turned into mere teaching institutes today," said NR Narayana Murthy. He was speaking at Indian Institute of Technology, Gandhinagar on Tuesday, while introducing the fresh batch of students to the methods of teaching and functioning in IITs across India.

"IITs and IIMs across India have merely become teaching institutions without paying much attention to research," he said.

According to Murthy, between 1991 and 2006, only 36 papers from Indian management and technological institutes were published in international journals.

The Infosys mentor stressed that students, apart from choosing their specialisation in engineering, should concentrate on research, which is in a sorry state in the country.

"It is an extremely sad affair. Research not only solves problems, it also aids the next generation to understand a subject well enough to take it up as a future job or entrepreneurial venture," added Murthy.

Murthy, besides congratulating the fresh batch of students, also told them: "It is important for students to translate classroom learning into reality. Real life problems involve more strategic problem solving mechanisms than learnt through tutorials in coaching classes and IITs." Supreet Saini, associate professor and co-ordinator for IIT-Gn foundation programme also welcomed the new batch. The five-week-long foundation programme concentrates on social awareness, physical and sports activities, creativity and exposure to cultural life of society.

Saini explained that during this programme, students will get a chance to visit Sabarmati Ashram, SEWA and Lothal besides having foreign lecturers.
