The Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIMA) has plans for another first-of-its-kind internal restructuring. The premier management school is planning to have three deans for the institute, instead of one dean that it currently has. Each of the three deans will head specific responsibilities like academics, administration and alumni & external affairs.

Faculty members of the institute have been asked to apply for the two additional posts, as the incumbent dean professor, BH Jajoo, is likely to take over as dean, academics. This step is believed to be taken in accordance with the recommendations of one of the committees appointed by the Union MHRD for IIMs’ reforms.

Sources at the institute said the objective of having more deans is to ease the burden of looking after various activities, while ensuring to develop each vital area with due attention. “Dean, Academics will look after planning for curriculum, research, faculty development, faculty exchange and recruitment, and all other associated areas,” a source said.

Similarly, dean, Administration will focus on all infrastructure-related issues and those related to the staff. Currently, the institute has the post of Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), which may be eliminated in the future. The third post, of the dean of Alumni and external relations, is the most interesting. This post will focus on networking with alumni across the globe. “Though there has been considerable interaction with IIMA alumni, we feel there is a greater need to reach out to them,” the source added.
