Mittal Patadiya, who is no different from kids her age, says she wants to become a doctor or an IAS officer, when she grows up.

However, what distinguishes this gutsy 13-year-old class IX student from her peer group is her sheer determination and courage.

The little braveheart had fought off 3 robbers who had invaded her foster parents’ home in November 2010. She will be conferred the national award for bravery by the President of India at the Republic Day parade on January 26.

DNA spoke over the phone with Mittal, who is in New Delhi right now until the parade.

“I wish to serve the country when I grow up. You can earn respect only if you do something for others’ betterment,” she said.

The pint-sized daredevil believes women need to stand up for rights and what they believe in. “Indian women need to show their determination and courage, and step up to challenges they face,” said Mittal.

Still in a daze over receiving an award, she says, “I had never thought that I would be given such a big award”. Mittal comes across as just another girl. “I love paani-puri and other street-side food. I love dancing as well,” she said.

Meanwhile, mother Dharmishta said, “Though injured, Mittal would keep reassuring me that everything would be alright.” Foster grandfather, Shivkumar Tehlani said, “Award or no award, we are very proud of our daughter, who saved our lives on that fateful day. We will give up our lives for her, if the need be,” he said.
