After the half-hearted assurances doled out by the heritage committee chairperson to find the truth behind the stolen figurines of Chabutara under the Ellisbridge, no step has been taken yet to determine the safety of the 400-year-old monument itself even on Sunday.

More shockingly, the deputy general manager of Heritage Project, PK Vasudevan Nayar claims he has not yet been informed officially by any of the concerned authorities about the theft of the valuable figurines.

Claiming to be completely clueless about the theft of the six figurines from the historical Chabutara near Ramvaadi area of riverfront near Gujari Bazar, Nayar said: "I am not aware about any such incident. But, if this has happened then it is a serious matter." Nayak stated firmly that neither the heritage advisor Debashish Nayak, nor heritage committee chairperson Bijal Patel has informed him about such an incident.

DNA was the first to report about the horrendous theft five days ago, but till today no official of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation has found the time nor bothered to look into the grave matter. After the figurines go missing, today the security of the chabutara is also at stake.
When briefed about the incident, Nayar assured DNA that he will personally visit the monument on Monday to take account of the present situation. "We will take every possible step to ensure safety of such historical monuments," said Nayar.

On Saturday, when asked about what steps have been taken after the reports of theft surfaced, Bijal Patel claimed that Debashish Nayak has been asked in written to submit a report about the monument. Surprisingly, Nayak submitted the articles published in DNA to her. He didn't even bother to visit the Chabutara to ensure the safety of the remaining structure. He only put forward the argument of 'official process' to be done from the higher authorities like Deputy Municipal Commissioner Capt Dilip Mahajan, in this regard.

When contacted on Sunday about his 'knowledge' on the theft, Mahajan chose to remain silent and not respond to DNA's query. Capt Mahajan had earlier played a very active role in clearing land for development of Riverfront project by conducting major demolition activities in the area.

He was also on the spot of demolition with full police protection to ensure quick and effective demolition and clearance of the site. But, it seems that our heritage, which is also Mahajan's responsibility, fails to capture his interest.
