Two more deaths were reported from Haryana's flood-hit Yamunanagar district taking the casualty toll to 35 in the state, even as the situation in Chandigarh improved following a considerable fall in water-level at the Hathnikund barrage.

The water level, which had risen to 90,000 cusecs yesterday, was down to 30,000 cusecs at the Hathnikund barrage this evening, Yamunanagar deputy commissioner, Ashok Sangwan said.

"There is no cause for panic. The water discharge is down today considerably after we opened both the western and eastern ends of the canal," he said.

There had been no heavy rainfall in the district since noon yesterday though there have been some intermittent showers.

"We continue to keep a watch on the situation and review it at short intervals of time. We would like to assure that as of now there is no cause for panic," he said.

Sangwan, however, said that two flood-related deaths had been reported from the district.

The victims were identified as Sheela Devi, 40, of Ganauli village and Liyaqat Ali, 36, of Nayagaon, taking the toll in the district to nine.

Ambala, Kurukshetra, Sirsa and Fatehabad were among the worst-affected districts due to the recent floods.

Sangwan said there was no disruption in vehicular traffic, dismissing reports that a national highway had been closed to traffic.

"The vehicular traffic on NH-73 which connects Yamunanagar to Poanta Sahib in Himachal Pradesh is also plying normally. We have never closed this highway at any point of time, though we had restricted the flow of heavy traffic on this route as a precaution. Light traffic has always been plying on this highway," he said.

Around 1,575 acres of land in Bilaspur tehsil's 13 villages had been affected by the floods due to heavy rains on July 31.

Flood water has receded from the agricultural land of six villages of the tehsil, the official said, adding a total of 30 villages in Bilaspur tehsil were flood-hit. Similarly, as many as 120 acres of land in Chahhrauli tehsil has been marooned by the flood, raising the total flood-hit area in the tehsil to 5,755 acres.

Due to heavy rains, village Mamli, Sudail and Kharwan in Jagadhari tehsil have also been affected by the flood. A total of 7,539 acres of land in 76 villages in the tehsil has been inundated with the flood water.

The flood water, however, is now gradually receding, he added.
