The H1N1 virus claimed its sixth victim in Gujarat on Sunday, when Hasmukh Hingoo, a resident of Bharuch town, died of the disease at the SSG Hospital in Vadodara. He was 46.

Soon after his death at 4:45 am on Sunday, Hingu’s body was wrapped in plastic by the hospital staff while his relatives and family members were given protective body covers and masks along with special plastic spectacles to cover their eyes.

On the advice of the hospital authorities, the deceased was cremated at the Bahucharaji crematorium located near the hospital, within an hour of his death. Hingoo is the first resident of Bharuch to succumb to the deadly virus.

SSG Hospital authorities told DNA that Hingoo, a resident of Zhadeshwar locality of Bharuch town, fell ill with high fever on August 10. On August 11, he was admitted to a private hospital when referred by a private doctor.

He spent 10 days in the private hospital. The hospital authorities referred him to the SSG Hospital in Vadodara when they suspected that he was suffering from swine flu. SSG hospital authorities said Hingoo was admitted to the hospital on Thursday and was immediately shifted to the isolation ward where he was put on a ventilator as he was suffering from acute breathlessness.

While his blood and swab samples were sent for confirmatory tests, he was given medication on the assumption that he was suffering from swine flu. On Saturday morning, the hospital received his test reports which confirmed that Hingoo was H1N1 positive. Hingoo’s condition continued to deteriorate throughout Saturday. He died at 4:45 am on Sunday morning.

Talking to DNA, the resident medical officer (RMO) in-charge of the hospital, Dr Praveenaben Thakkar, said Hingoo’s condition was critical from the day he was admitted to the hospital.

“We put him on a ventilator soon after he was admitted on Thursday,” she said. “His condition became critical on Saturday night. The cause of death was bilateral pneumonia and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). We do not know how the patient contracted the infection because he had no prior history of contact with a swine flu patient.”
