When the Howrah-Kurla Lokmanya Tilak Gyaneshwari Super Deluxe Express chugged into the terminus at Kurla on Saturday night, a visibly relieved crowd of relatives rushed to hug their kin.

“I am so relieved that my sister and her family are fine,” said Nanda Sampat, who had come to receive her sister Nina Kalwani.
Most passengers had tales of a harrowing sleepless night spent inside locked compartments, while the CRPF conducted a night march to ensure that there was no subsequent attack soon after.
“The train conductor told us to keep our compartment locked the entire night after the incident occurred at around 1am. We stood in silence waiting for news till 5.30am,” said Prakash Modi, Mira Road based businessman who had traveled to Kolkata on business and was on his way back on the ill fated train.

“Several male passengers from the unaffected compartments rushed to help the injured. There were bodies lying everywhere,” said Deeksha Upadhyay.

“However the railway personnel took great care of us and went out of their way to ensure that we felt safe and secure,” she added.

“This is like a second birth. I am happy to have escaped alive,” said Binayak Pani, municipalty medical officer, Rourkela. While most passengers were all praise for the railway authorities, Howrah resident Shabana Sheikh who was travelling with her children raised some uncomfortable questions. “Why was there no

security? Why did it take so long for help to arrive? Will Mamata Banerjee answer the families of those who lost their loved ones?” she asked, screaming hysterically.
