The name of the encyclopedia is derived from two words - Bhagwad and Gomandal.

The Maharaja was very much fond of Gujarati language. He started the administrative office of Bhagwadgomandal dictionary at Gondal on October 1, 1928 with initial contribution of 20,000 words collected by him. He released the first volume containing 902 pages on August 25, 1944.

This was followed by the release of subsequent volumes in every one or two years. The ninth and the final volume was released on March 9, 1955.

Ratilal Chandaria started working on a digital dictionary in 1975. He contributed his collection of words and started building a lexicon. When Bhagwadgomandal was reprinted in 1986, he  purchased a few sets.
