Gujarat women awarded for their social work

Women who have helped or benefited society by their work were honoured by Gujarat Stree Kelavani Mandal.

It was a moment of pride for the old women who were seated on the stage with Morari Bapu. All of them have contributed to society through their social work by promoting education, social work etc.

Organised by Gujarat Stree Kelavani Mandal, the award ceremony aimed at honouring and awarding women from different cities of the state and the chief guest for the event was Morari Bapu.

The first prize went to 75-year-old Mahashweta Vaidya of Junagadh. Vaidya was awarded the 'Arunaben Desai award'.

Vaidya pursued her Masters in Social Work (MSW) from Tata Institute in 1958. She told DNA, "One of my passions is doing social work. I have got the opportunity to work and learn social work with some of the legendary social activists like Ravishankar Maharaj and Jugatram Dave." Vaidya was involved in helping and working for the homeless poor people of Junagadh who had lost their houses in the floods of 1985.

The second award was given to Jankiben Vasant, who has worked incessantly for slum children and their education. The founder of Samvedana Trust, a non-profit organization, Janki established 'Visamo Kids' in which the children belonging to below the poverty line background, selected after an IQ test, were educated in their field of interest. Presently, around 50 poor kids are being educated here. Jankiben was awarded the Shrimati Indraba Bhogindrarao Divetiya Award.

The third award was given to Ratanben Ratadiya, for her contribution in the field of education. Since the age of 18 Ratadiya has been into educating people. She accepted the post of a teacher in 1964 and since then she has been teaching. Her got the 'Best Teacher' award by the state government in the year 1993 and was also awarded by the Government of India in 1992. One of Ratadia's major contributions was educating the children of Bharwad community.

Praising the women for their work, Morari Bapu said that women are strong pillars and represent power. "They have a unique ability to suffer pain and still move ahead to achieve what they have decided. I believe that women today are at par with men and are excelling in every field," added Bapu.
