Justice RA Mehta, 75, is known as a simple, down-to-earth man who likes to keep a low profile. The retired judge and his wife live in Akash Towers next to the chief justice's bungalow in Bodakdev area. His son works abroad.
After retirement, Justice Mehta worked as an arbitrator in several cases. He also gives lessons on law and advocacy to students and young lawyers.
Justice Mehta was born on May 4, 1936 and enrolled as an advocate on March 7, 1962. He began his practice in Rajkot and after a year moved to Ahmedabad. He began practicing at the Gujarat high court from 1963 onwards.
He has appeared in court to argue on matters related to constitutional, civil, criminal, company, excise, and labour laws.
He also worked as additional standing counsel to the central government from 1974 to 1978 and again from October 1982 onwards.
He was an advocate for the Machchu Dam Inquiry Commission constituted by the government of Gujarat.
He was appointed as additional judge of the Gujarat high court on September 5, 1983 and confirmed as a permanent judge on June 26, 1984. He became the acting Chief Justice of the state from September 12, 1995 to July 1, 1996 and retired on May 4, 1998.
According to close associates, Mehta believes in 'simple living and high thinking'. He met Anna Hazare a decade ago and since then the two have been very close. Even when Anna came to the city a few months ago, he stayed at Justice Mehta's residence.
Usually, Mehta begins his day with a swim and then moves on to arbitration cases. After completing his legal work, he discusses law with young lawyers. He is also said to be fond of internet surfing and travelling with fellow lawyers.
