Gujarat government has proposed to develop the Mahatma Mandir in Gandhinagar as an iconic tourist destination exhibiting the life of Mahatma Gandhi, a top state industry department official said today.

"Mahatma Mandir shall be developed as an iconic tourist destination that will exhibit the life of Mahatma Gandhi in
two phases," the official told PTI.

Larsen and Toubro (L&T) has bagged the project for construction of Mahatma Mandir, venue for the Fifth Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit (VGGS) 2011, he added.

Phase one construction will house an international level convention centre, three big exhibition halls, and small halls
having conferencing facility to facilitate one on one buyer
seller meets in phase one, the official said adding that the
construction of the convention centre attracts an investment
of Rs 150 crore and will have a capacity of 5,000 delegates.

In the second phase of this project we have proposed to develop a modern bridge connecting the phase one to it, and an iconic salt mound like concrete structure housing a museum, library and research centre on Mahatma Gandhi, he said.

A sculpture garden having intricately carved stone murals exhibiting life of Gandhi will be the star attraction of the second phase development. There will be a heavy sloping green cover all over, the official said.

The state government has fixed December 15, 2010 as the deadline for first phase completion of Mahatma Mandir, besides
development of Central Vista, the prime connecting route to
the mandir in Gandhinagar, as a lush green corridor, a state
official said.

Earlier, the fourth VGGS-2009 was held at Science City and buoyed by its success the state government decided to construct an international convention centre in Gandhinagar with a rider to promote it as an tourist destination later on, he added.

Over 8,663 MoU's were signed during VGGS-2009 attracting an investment of USD 243 billion in the state, which are under various stages of implementation, an official said.

Japan was the partner country for the international summit held in 2009, and more than 600 delegates from 47 countries participated in this biennial event held in Gujarat.
